Types of garden furniture

 

You may have heard garden furniture being referred to as patio furniture. Generally this is acceptable, however of course garden furniture relates to a wider range of outdoor furniture than the term patio furniture encompasses on its own.

 

Materials used in garden furniture

 

Generally, garden or patio furniture is constructed using weather-resistant materials, including metals (chrome furniture is very common), stone, forms of plastic and vinyl, glass and treated woods.

 

Metals garden furniture

 

Of the metals, aluminium is proving to be very popular. This is because it is naturally robust (as a more-reactive element than those it is exposed to in the open air, it is naturally resistant to chemical attack) and very lightweight. This allows aluminium garden chairs and garden tables to be moved easily.

 

Wooden garden furniture

 

In the class of wooden furniture, teak (a dark hardwood) has various properties which explain why it is so popular for use in the construction of outdoor tables and garden chairs. The principle feature which makes Teak so popular is its resistance to decay, rot, swelling, chemicals, fire, acids and alkalis. This defence is brought about by the naturally occurring silica in the wood. Other woods commonly used include oak and pine. Pine is popular due to its relatively low cost and the fact that is can be sourced from sustainable and properly-managed forests.

 

Plastic outdoor furniture

 

Plastic is a surprisingly versatile material. There are many varieties of plastics that are produced with differing properties to suit specific situations. Plastic is the cheapest and most common material used in the production of outdoor and garden furniture, including garden tables and garden chairs. Plastic is naturally water-proof and is more-or-less completely resistant to any outdoor environments; it is also light to move around. Other than cleaning the furniture before use, plastic furniture is possible the most hassle-free; however it does not have the same aesthetically pleasing qualities that wooden furniture does.
